Part Two of our Fourth of July Special series from the Watchman Dana G Smith. I give you the Fourth of July and the Way it was! During Division in America, partisanship, and me first; I don’t mind publishing and making these kinds of patriotic truths available right now. We need them. Today the Biden administration, the attack on the America we grew up in has continued. Yet the truths of what we believed still live on in the hearts of true Americans. The Fourth of July and the Way it Was, is for me a day of remembrance. Our family was just one of many that celebrated it in our town. It was the time of parades, fireworks, patriotism, and picnics with family and friends. It was unashamed, unabashed, out in the open, brazen, fun, and our purpose was to celebrate a nation’s founding called America. It is hard to imagine back then how society could turn on this time that we enjoyed so much. Flag waving at parades, enjoying a wonderful time. Everyone enjoyed the main street events.

Today we find people that live in this nation who would not be considered Americans. These are usually the same people that diss white folk and call many fascists. It was my dad and his generation who fought the real fascists. Today the generations of blinded that push anti-Americanism and patriotism have not a clue as to the real fascists or the real America. That America I grew up in has disappeared. There are few cities in the America of today who still somewhat resemble that America so long ago.

In my America we had the family, everyone knew everyone else on the block, and the man was the breadwinner. The woman stayed at home, cooked, baked, raised kids, kept the home in order. She would be the law at home and if we kids did not mind, then Dad would back her up when he got home. This would entail the backside being hit with a two-inch leather belt. “If you don’t mind mother then be sure when I get home you will get what is coming to you” Dad would say. I will never forget him saying, “Son this hurts me worse than you”! I thought, then if it does; give me the belt and let me hit you”! At the time you learned tricks like repenting immediately, crying as if you were dying after a few hits of the belt, and running to mom for protection.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance. The LORD looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men.

Dad was the authoritarian in the house, the law backer, and Mom was one who would lay that law down. When she spoke, you knew Dad was behind her! But the purpose was to raise a child with morals, obedience, respect to elders, and obedient to parents. On Sundays we would go to church as would Grandma and Grandpa. My grandparents had a farm, and my mom was a born and bred farm girl while my dad was a Californian from Avalon Catalina. He was just under six feet tall, played golf, had been a navy medic in World War Two. He was from an extensive line of Germanic and Norwegian descent. Our ancestors can be traced to the very beginnings of the American colonies when this nation was founded.

I was raised on a creek bank, hold a stick fishing pole, and carrying a can of worms as bait. I would follow dad up and down the streams of Wyoming. Before I knew much about anything I knew how to camp, fish, look for rattlers, knew what hunting was, and loved the outdoors. In the summer we spent time playing outside and not on computers or cell phones. We had toys, bikes, and a lot of imagination. For hours we neighborhood kids would play. We spent time in each other’s homes and make sure the neighbor woman knew your mom and would tell her if you did anything wrong.

When not fishing it was a possibility that I was on the farm. Grandad was bred of hearty Pennsylvania Dutch stock and married into a family of hardworking Americans. Both Grandmother and Grandfather were homesteaders in Wyoming, near the Wind River. It was an extremely hard life making ends meet. Mom to the day of her death would not garden nor hoe nor go out into any fields. As a young girl she spent time from an exceedingly early age doing all that. She would say “You plant the garden and take care of it, bring the stuff to me when it is ready, and I will cook it, but I will not hoe or spend time keeping the garden”! But despite the tough times, eventually Grandpa was able to get ahead and have a much larger farm. Then he sold that over time and got a smaller spread. It was that 140-acre smaller farm that I spent a lot of time on. Along with my cousins, a trip to grandads meant a chance to be with him, work the farm; and then enjoy the time there.

Moreover, I learned the ways of farming, flood irrigation, the in’s and out of chickens, getting eggs, running from the rooster that chased me, and how to pluck a chicken. There I learned of bag balm, milking a cow, shearing sheep when it was time. But I also was the one at the bottom of a large fifteen to twenty-foot sack in which I was put, and the wool thrown to me to stomp down. Then the whole sack would be sewn shut when I was done making sure it was packed.  I came to realize what rocky mountain oysters were and although my uncle tried to get me to eat them, I was sickened at the thought. I saw animals shot, slaughtered, and wrapped. Our food was fresh from the farm. Only the sugar, flour, coffee, and other items came from the once-a-week trip to the store. This was close in proximity to grandma’s egg and milk route she had. Food was canned, cream was churned for butter, our meat was from the older animals. Lamb was out, they were for stock and for selling. We ate mutton not lamb. Although I never spent my whole childhood on the farm it played an especially important part of my life and roots.

My other grandfather had a cattle Ranch in Grass Valley California. In the northern part of California out of Grass Valley a way, near the Bear River. That was where he had a ranch. On a visit I would fish in his pond, pet the deer who came to the ranch house for a snack, and fish for frogs. Using a cane pole of twelve foot with fishing line and a hook tipped off with a small bit of red cloth we would catch frogs the size of a battleship. Or so it seemed. My cousin and I went fishing one day for frogs and filled a five-gallon bucket with them and carried them to grandpa to have frog legs for dinner. Well, he got mad, and we had to go put them back. You see Grandfather had been a Game warden for California and was the warden at Catalina Island and patrolled the ocean there up some five hundred miles along the coast. He also had been a sea captain and fished on a regular basis. So, at the Ranch the pond with frogs and fish were there and as a Game warden he wanted the correct balance. What we caught we released back into the pond. Whatever was taken and eaten was carefully monitored. But the for the most part both grandma and grandpa were pros at fly fishing and spent time on the Klamath River in Idaho and in Mexico as well fishing. At time when we visited, we went fishing in the Sierra mountains or other streams he knew.

Then there was Uncle Bills house filled with a whole host of girls and boys near my age. They had a swimming pool which we would swim in.  The most fun of all was going fishing with Uncle Bill. Whether it was for stripe bass in the American and Sacramento rivers or up in the mountains it was up my avenue, and I was always in for good camping and fishing trip there.

Today, Grandpa and Grandma on both sides are gone. As are my wife’s relatives and parents. Our grandkids are now the seventh generation from the Irish homesteaders here in Wyoming.  Plus, we have added to the generations. The roots we have are deep in America, in Wyoming, and in California. We cannot deny it. But also, we are Americans and today the divisive idiocy, the sanctimonious liberal media, and those in Hollywood who take up the moral guard is ludicrous.  We are far removed from sensibilities and morality to which I was raised here. We had no race riots here. One time in the sixties a group of black activists came to town and wanted to demonstration. Our sheriff whom we knew, told them that they were the only black people in town and if they wanted to protest go ahead. Well, they left town.

In those days we found a hard-working day, making ends meet, little television [no color], old dial phones, phone booths, and truly little good freezer food. Mom knew how to bake, sew, and do a lot of things then. I am proud to have had a mom who was really a mother and a housewife. Today, women face so much more. Especially if they really want to be stay at home mom. Society today rejects the traditional roles. From the male role model to the female role, all has changed and not for the better. The family in the traditional role model is gone. Society and America has gone on to a new era. We would have laughed ourselves silly listening to those who told us of so many genders a person could have. Today that is accepted, even by scholars.

While my home life was not perfect, it was certainly lived in an era to which I believe was more Americana, Patriotic, family oriented, and moral. Our era had problems certainly, but today the very fabric of this nation is torn apart by hate, bias, greed, pride, racism, and sin!

This will not change and in fact I believe that it will worsen. I have determined a long time ago to live by faith in my God and Father through our Savior Lord Jesus Christ. No matter what America does, I will follow him, lead my family in that faith, and challenged all men to repent and follow the Lord. While I miss the America, I used to live in, I do not want to go back. I move forward, pressing toward the mark of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. I look for a new nation, a new country, a new place, a new city whose builder and maker is God. I know the challenges today and know where I stand. It is to that end I live, for me and my house we will serve the Lord. You do what you will, but Christ Jesus [Yeshua] will rule for ever and he will come again soon.

Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding but that which is in the midst of fools is made known.

No matter what America used to be, I do not like nor appreciate the ends to which America has fallen! There are those who love this America. Then we find the masses pushing to remove the very binding of our nation, removing the cords of the constitution and faith in God. On the fourth of July and every other day, in which I live will be a time to bless the Lord. It has been His blessing allowing me to live in this nation. I am not alone; many know what I speak of. But to those who are the enemy of the America I was raised in; be sure your end will be misery and defeat! You may die in that disgust and rebellion unless you repent!
