In the Darkness of the Night where the lost seek God, it is God who finds them! This is Prose, a fictional story by Dana G Smith that presents a truth of today’s world and the dangers of the real darkness that young and old alike face. The Gospels warn us “do not offend or harm these little ones for it were better if you had a millstone around your neck and drowned in the depth of the sea.”

In the darkness of the night, I sought out God. I wondered where I might find him. It was cold, lonely, and no one was about except one lone person across the street. He was standing under a lone streetlight, dressed in dark clothing, and eyed me suspiciously. I moved away at a regular pace ignoring him. As I walked, the sounds of faint steps echoed behind me.
Fear welling up, I turned around. Nothing! I could see only empty streets and some lite up houses. I shook off the fear and reminded myself nothing was about, so I continued my way. In mind of what I was doing, there was no place to which I was headed. Just forward, to seek out God. To fight some sense of the place and of the time to which I was born.
And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
Mat 18:3-6 | IN THE DARKNESS OF THE NIGHT THERE IS HOPE
I passed by large storefronts which were darkened but had a light behind them. Cameras were on as part of the store security, but I did not care. No one passed by, which suited me. No one cared. I was hoping God cared. How can you be so lonely in a city so filled with people? There were churches, all dark now as I passed by one large one. Is God in there I wondered? Is he sleeping or gone on a trip? Foolishness to think such things. Everyone knows God is in heaven. Wherever that is.
I turned the corner and immediately in front of me was a stranger under a light. He was close that I could make out that he was watching me closely. How did he get there I wondered? Moving forward I drew closer as his countenance was different. There was something about him, but as I looked; I did not know what it was. Friendly, yes that was it. His eyes looked at me as I passed by, we had eye contact.
I shivered as I passed and moved on. Then as I was but a short distance, I heard his voice.
“You’re looking for God? I can help!? His voice was clear and resonated within my being. I moved on as fear took hold of me.
“No wait.” He urged, with a calm soothing voice. But I began to run. Before long, his voice and presence were far from me. Yet as I did so, inside the feeling of loss overtook me. Wondering why, I pondered this feeling. Pushing all this aside, I stubbornly was convinced in my heart to flee this area. I thus went faster somewhat out of breath.
I passed the main city streets, and the area became even darker. Sparsely placed streetlights were further apart leaving black areas to walk through. What was more high hedges and trees were lining the sidewalk and the street. My pace slowed as I eyed every bush, tree, and empty area which I passed by. My heart was racing as anxiousness filled my heart. This area was frightening, very much so. Just ahead was a streetlight and relieved was I when I drew near. Looking at the small area of light, suddenly a man slowly walked under the light and looked directly at him. His appearance startled me.
He had on a hat that I had seen in old movie reruns on a classic movie channel. His eyes though had a strange look. In fact, they seemed to glow somewhat with a red tint. It was not like the werewolf movies I watched where the eyes were all glowing red. In fact, he looked like a Hollywood star from those old movies. Moving to the other side of the street I passed him by quickly as his eyes watched me. I was unnerved by his appearance and the fact he was the second person tonight I passed by. Then I heard more footsteps and looked back. It was him; his hat gave him away along with the sharp click of his shoe hitting the cement.
Around the corner I went and began running. Then as I ran, I heard a voice.
“Where are you going so fast young lady?” The voice trailed off, but I knew it was the same person earlier in the night. The first one I saw on this night walk.
“Young Lady”? I shouted out! “No one can see that. I am dressed in a hoodie to hide my hair. Jeans and ordinary Gym shoes along with a hat cover it all. How did you know?”
“Yes, all that plus your face is grimy, dirty, and your hair filthy. You smell like a garbage pit, and your eyes are full of hate and sorrow.” He came up to me and stopped directly in front. By now we were under another lamp, and I could see him clearly. Somehow, I felt comfortable with him being there.
“Well, this is a dangerous area. What is your name?” He asked.
“Why do you want to know that?” I persisted. I trusted no one.
“It is not polite to talk without knowing who you’re conversing with.” He said calmly.
“Oh, Okay.” Somehow this made sense and the softness of his voice, the smile on his face, and his sparkling eyes seemed to say it was okay.
“But first what is your name and what are you doing here?” I threw back at him.
“I am called Preacher Haines locally. But originally it was Thomas G Haines Jr at your service.”
His reply was smooth as he told me with direct eye contact. To which I was uncomfortable with. I looked no one directly in the eyes.
“Why did you ask me about looking for God?” I was still nervous and did not trust him.
“Well, that was what you are doing, even now are you not. Tell me straight, are you looking for God.” He stopped with a smile as he looked over my shoulder. “Hmmm, he murmured quickly. Just a minute have some business to attend to.”
As I turned my eyes followed him down the street. He confronted the other man who was even more suspicious than this Preacher I now have been speaking with.
As I watched the Preacher walked directly to him. Words were being spoken. I could tell it was not a friendly one. In fact, the Preacher looked like he was doing something besides talking.
The scene unfolded before me with what was conflict although no fists were swung. Soon the Preacher turned around and began his walk back to where I stood.
As I watched the Preacher near me, I could see the other individual one moment and then the next, he was gone.
“Hey man, where did that guy go and who is he?” I shouted out loud in a voice that shook even me. But the surprise of him just seemingly disappearing was evident.
“Oh him, that is daemon. He is the prince of darkness in this area. He has legions of kids under him. One’s just like you. He would have cared for you, but your soul would wind up in hell unless God’s mercy finds you. I merely resisted him with the Word of God and prayer. He left; he hates God’s Word of Truth.”
“Are you serious?” I persisted.
“Yes, that is what I do and my calling from the Lord. I have seen, met, and rescued many a young soul on streets like this one.” He finished, then said “I have a place where nice people, godly people will care for you tonight. Fresh food, safe place to sleep, and you can leave anytime. It is just down the street.”
“No thanks, I am on a short walk and then will go home.” I answered quickly.
“No, you’re not. You had a place but the person who took you in, which was a former family friend raped you and threw you out. You sleep in dark alleys, eat garbage, or beg for money to get by on. You believe no one cares and you are looking for God if he exists. Well, I was sent by this God to go fetch Spiker.” He looked at me dead serious.
“Spiker? What a Name, but yes that’s my handle. It was as far away from being a gal as I could get.” I stopped, as an old pain returned; I bent over in agony.
“What is your real name Spiker, He persisted; then said You need to have that looked at. We can help with that as well.” So, what do you say…err what is your name again?”
“Natalie, my name is Natalie, and I went by Nat.” I answered as I rubbed my side.
“Your real name Nat.” He replied.
“Okay, it is Natalie Bertha Wood short name Natalie Wood.” Replying quickly, I looked at him. Then said, “yes take me to your place and no funny business as I can take care of myself.”
“You’re kidding, like in Natalie Wood?” he asked and then took my arm, and we began to walk to where he invited me.
“Yup, mom and dad loved her acting. They were horrified when she died. Being as I was the only child, they named me after her.” I finished and did not want to talk anymore.
As we walked the pain was more intense. I looked up as I saw other people running towards us. Then all went blank.
“She has passed out. From the looks of it, I would say Appendicitis is my best guess but could be blockage as well. Call the doc.”
Two mid-twenties something young adults grabbed Natalie.
Later she was taken to the hospital and tests revealed she needed immediate surgery as a burst appendix was determined.
As Natalie was in the hospital for some time, this left plenty of opportunity to get to know her new family. No one knew where she came from. She did not match any lost missing children or young adults either.
Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost. How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray? And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray. Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.
Mat 18:10-14 | IN THE DARKNESS OF THE NIGHT THERE IS HOPE
The story for Natalie is not over. In time she did find the Lord God and the Son Jesus Christ who died for her sins. She is one of many now who with other young soldiers are on the streets posted as they look out for others who want to find God. Hoping that God would find them, for many have lost hope of finding Him on their own.
For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward. And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.
Mar 9:41-42 | IN THE DARKNESS OF THE NIGHT THERE IS HOPE
There are thousands and thousands of children, young teens, teenagers, and young adults who have faced horrific treatment like Natalie. She is one face among countless and remains so. You will never meet Natalie. She is a quiet warrior working to bring those looking for God to the real and true God. Natalie remembers the one who found her and brought her to the place of truth and safety. It was Lord Jesus Christ who used Thomas Haines, the preacher and those with him. They were the ones who led Natalie to the true redemption and God all by the leading of the Spirit of God. Finally, Natalie is found in the faces of young people worldwide who have been taken advantage of and have been hurt, drugged out, and are looking for love and hope. While this article is fictional prose, the truths it brings stands against a backdrop of child kidnapping on a global scale. This alone is only part of the story and abuse of young children and adults. Those who do such things are in it for money and have not one whit of love for their victims. God will judge all who do these things to the innocent ones.
This style of writing is what I identify as Prose:
Prose can be identified as “ordinary writing” of a people in speaking or writing. I use this fictional or non-fictional method to produce an encounter which may or may not be fictional but has a deep spiritual or moral lesson to it.

IN THE DARKNESS OF THE NIGHT THERE IS HOPE | Jeremiah’s Pertinent Message
Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not: (22) Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it? (23) But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone. (24) Neither say they in their heart, let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest. (25) Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you. (26) For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men. (27) As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore, they are become great, and waxen rich. (28) They are waxen fat, they shine yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge. (29) Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? (30) A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land; (31) The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?
