American Memories on Memorial Day

American Memories on Memorial Day is not the same as it was when I was a kid. Not at all. It was a different era.  Memorial Day, the Fourth of July were the major celebrations for America filled with Parades and picnics. Solemn ceremonies at grave sites honoring our fallen heroes. This was what America was. It also was one where the family ate together practically all meals. Today we find America divided more than at the time of the Civil War. Riots, arson, murder, and more are destroying our cities. We are Americans today, but a very harsh, jealous, hateful, spiteful, and separated people. In this group are also those who are those who are not hateful nor spiteful; neither jealous or harsh; but overall, we are in trouble.

American Memories on Memorial Day

Bing Crosby was crooning a Salute to America while Judy Garland sang the Battle Hymn of the Republic.  Later Kate Smith was singing Memories of you singing a Memorial Salute to the Armed Forces. Then there is Les Brown with Doris Day singing Sentimental Journey circa 1945. As the Forties Junction on Sirius said, I recall these words which the announcer said: “yes there were cookouts, picnics, and fun; but only because there were those who gave their lives!”

My dad would come home from work at noon and we all would sit down to lunch. Dinner time, Dad and Mom and I would be having dinner. Breakfast was the same. We have television but nothing like today. We had movies for a quarter but not the kind today. It was simpler, happier, and people were not afraid to say, “God bless America”! But in all this there were unwritten rules passed down by my parents.

“The blessed Religion revealed in the word of God will remain an eternal and awful monument to prove that the best Institution may be abused by human depravity; and that they may even, in some instances be made subservient to the vilest purposes. Should, hereafter, those incited by the lust of power and prompted by the Supineness or venality of their Constituents, overleap the known barriers of this Constitution and violate the unalienable rights of humanity: it will only serve to shew, that no compact among men (however provident in its construction and sacred in its ratification) can be pronounced everlasting an inviolable, and if I may so express myself, that no Wall of words, that no mound of parchm[en]t can be so formed as to stand against the sweeping torrent of boundless ambition on the one side, aided by the sapping current of corrupted morals on the other.”

–George Washington, fragments of the Draft First Inaugural Address, 1789
American Memories on Memorial Day

First off, Dad would tell me “Son there are two things you don’t discuss in public, these are politics and religion.” Then I was introduced by my parents to the paramount golden rule which followed what the Methodist church would teach. This was “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you!” This taken from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in Luke chapter six. Make certain today people have not a care to do this today!  Right now, as I write this, Dooley Wilson in 1942 sang the popular tune “As Time goes by”! No doubt, time goes by even for me.

I remember in the time when Grandpa Smith died, my Dad and Mom went and buried him while I stayed home. Dad said, one day it will be my turn. He viewed it as inevitable and he was practical about it. But I did not want to think of that day. Then one day it came, and I found out my sister and her husband had already taken care of Dad. He died, and they never told me. A two-hour drive away and she failed to call me. I missed his funeral as he never had one. My sister and her husband had him cremated and had strewn his ashes. I never got to say goodbye. The last time I saw him in the Nursing home one of two visits. The first time he said he was fine and not to visit him again. The second time he never knew me.

Moreover, he had done fine, then one day after a fall at home; he was in the Nursing home. He did not live long at the Nursing Home. It was evident when he died at 89 that he had gone there to die. The date was 2013. He was tired and the fighter in him gave up. I miss him, but even more; I miss not saying goodbye. I had planned on being there. Such is life, when some opportunities pass you by; they do not come around again. Sorrow and feeling sorry won’t help. Guilt either won’t help. Live your live and move on by faith, as the Lord would have you do. Do as your parents taught you, do unto others as you would have them do unto you! So be it! I press on. So, must you! Yet memories of those days growing up and my family we ever be with me. Today with our own family, we are creating new memories.

“It is our duty to endeavor always to promote the general good; to do to all as we would be willing to be done by were we in their circumstances; to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly before God. These are some of the laws of nature which every man in the world is bound to observe, and which whoever violates exposes himself to the resentment of mankind, the lashes of his own conscience, and the judgment of Heaven. This plainly shows that the highest state of liberty subjects us to the law of nature and the government of God.”

–Samuel West, On the Right to Rebel Against Governors, 1776
American Memories on Memorial Day

Yep, time flies by. Our family had a history of defending this nation. Our lineage goes back to the founding of America. In addition, our relatives like many others; fought in the civil war. A time of a divided nation. Such is the case is today, a truly divided America! Dad was a Navy corpsman medic in the South Pacific. Grandpa did daily runs up and down the coast of California for the government in security from his boat. He lived on Catalina and was the Ranger of the area. I was in the service during Nam’ and that alone was enough. It was a losing situation and a political war from the beginning.

As I write this I recall this nation today and how so many are so ill informed. America today is divided about like the era of the civil war.  Part and parcel of this is that it is a sin to be patriotic, to be American, and to believe in God. Just the phrase “God bless America” which was used so much in our historical past is now verboten. While we do have a President by the name of Donald Trump who openly wants to make America Great again; well he faces diametrically opposed radicals who are politically aligned against him and his administration. What is so threatening about “making America Great again”? It is the fact if they were to succeed it only would be by Gods grace and mercy. A fact the opposition hates. We hate the God of America in this nation and will serve any other god, demon, desire, or hell if it attracts us.

And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

(Luk 6:31-36)

In conclusion, I do wish one and all a hearty God bless and for you to truly know how Blessed America was by our Lord God.  As I finish this, Billie Holiday is singing Pennies from Heaven, circa 1936-37 from her album the Quintessential Billie Holiday Volume 3. Every time it rains, it rains Pennies from heaven, yep this is the essential and Quintessential Billie. It is typical early Americana in the 40’s to fifties arena.

I also thank all servicemen, service women, and all support staff and agencies who helped the military far from home and families. Yep I spent my first Christmas and other holidays away from the family. I was seventeen in the Navy and found out quickly the blessing of those who helped us. Now Glenn Miller and His Orchestra is playing “Thanks for the Memory”, circa 1940-41. It was a time my family were well into the war effort. The beginning of World War two is generally given as the First of September 1939 with the end as the second of September 1945. At the end, My Dad was in the South Pacific and waiting for the invasion of Japan. To which the rumor was it would take a million casualties of Young Americans before they would win. Good or bad, the bomb which many a person hates today; really saved millions of lives on both sides.  I close this with Bing Crosby singing Merry Macs- You made me love you, 1941! Also “Glenn Miller and the Army Air Force Band playing a salute to “Tail End Charlie” 1944, the rear gunner on our big planes in the war!
